This year’s Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone will feature a truly unique twist on tradition. LEGO, now an official Formula 1 partner, has designed and constructed the podium trophies entirely from their iconic bricks, marking a first in the sport’s history.

Innovative Design Blending Tradition and Playfulness

The new LEGO trophies are inspired by the legendary Royal Automobile Club (RAC) Trophy, a symbol of British racing heritage since 1950. The brick-built awards pay homage to this iconic design while infusing LEGO’s signature creativity and playfulness. Each trophy is topped with a golden LEGO brick and features a collectible LEGO Formula 1 car mounted on its front, perfectly balancing tradition and innovation.

The Creative Process Behind the Trophies

Samuel Liltorp Johnson, Creative Lead at the LEGO Group, spearheaded the design. The process began after Easter and was completed at record pace. Johnson worked closely with Silverstone to ensure the trophies would both respect the legacy of the RAC Trophy and tell a new, playful story through LEGO bricks. According to Johnson, the collaboration was driven by the desire to "inspire the kids of tomorrow" and to celebrate 75 years of Formula 1 at Silverstone.

Engineering for Strength and Durability

Given the podium’s high-energy celebrations, the LEGO team engineered the trophies for maximum durability. Johnson incorporated a LEGO Technic spine for added strength and ensured each layer is interlocked both vertically and horizontally. He admitted that seeing how the drivers handle the trophies on the podium is "the most nerve-wracking thing" in his life, especially recalling incidents like Lando Norris accidentally breaking Max Verstappen’s trophy in 2023.

LEGO’s Growing Role in Formula 1

This project marks another milestone in LEGO’s expanding partnership with Formula 1. Previously, LEGO collaborated with McLaren to create a full-size, driveable McLaren P1, and released official F1 sets to celebrate the sport’s 75th anniversary. Fans may remember the buzz at the Miami Grand Prix, where F1 drivers took fully functional LEGO cars for a spin.
